Before recent financial turmoil, banks were more concerned about their profitability. They attempted to maximize profits to increa se shareholders wealth by increasing their financial leverage. A large deposit base provided for high financial leverage for banks, while their equity cushion continued to diminish. Most banks were using a ratio of more than twenty times debt compared to their equity. Low level of equity provided a very small cushion for the banks in case of a financial turmoil. A bank with three percent equity could suffer a loss of all its shareholders wealth if it lost just a minor fraction of its loan assets. For example, bank with an equity base of 10 billion pounds and a loan base of as high as 300 billion pounds, would have lost all its equity with a decrease of 3.33 % in the value of its loan assets. Therefore, there is a trade-off involved and the management has to choose the optimum level between return and liquidity. An economic crisis results in high levels of unemployment and can cause the non-performing loans to increase significantly. Lack of diversification into various asset classes in financing loans can result in major bank failures. During the recent banking crisis, subprime lending was at its peak. A component that lacks diversification was the subprime mortgage lending. A large number of mortgagees were speculating on housing prices and did not have suffi cient means to pay the dues. Banks were lending on zero down payment options where the mortgage holder had a call option to exercise. If housing prices increase, the mortgagee can sell the house, pay the mortgage amount and make a profit without any investment. However, if housing prices go down the mortgagee only lost the payments made already, which acted as an option premium. As the housing market collapsed, the losses were to be borne by the banking industry. Mortgages are pooled together to form collateralized mortgage obligations. These securities make mortgages from illiquid investments into liquid securities that sell in the secondary market. The high interest rates paid on mortgages and the liquidity feature of the securities attracted investors to invest trillions. The high demand for mortgage-backed securities in turn resulted in too much capital availability to create excessive low quality mortgages. As economy staggered and unemployment increased a high rate of mortg age default created the subprime crisis resulting in many banks to fail. As competitive pressures, increase only banks with high level of efficiency can survive. Larger banks enjoy both economies of scale and economies of scope. In an economic downturn, small and medium banks cannot maintain their net interest margins and tend to respond weakly to competitive pressures. Therefore, in an attempt to survive banks initiate mergers and acquisitions. Through mergers, these banks aim to improve efficiencies and reduce costs in order to improve their net interest margins and survive the hard times. Mergers do not always attain their desired goals. Many times the managements do not get along well, at other times the estimated synergies of the merger tend to be overestimated. Also, valuation models could have been erroneous resulting in huge write down of goodwill assets in the years to come. This can also wipe away the equity of the bank and eventually cause a bank to fail. Banks s eek to maintain an active match between their assets and liabilities. A large gap between assets and liabilities can result in adverse movements. If a bank has a positive gap, its assets are more interest rate sensitive than its liabilities. Criminology Zones Essay Vince Zwilling Criminology 1:00 T/R Professor Corbin Crime Zones and Reasoning (Poverty, Race, Social Class) Sociology is a branch of the social sciences that attempts to help us understand society and how people interact. As with many other social sciences, sociology employs theories to help understand why people make certain decisions. Theories that help us explain societal trends are usually segmented in order to accurately examine the specific dynamics of different sections of society. Communities, institutions, gender, race and population are a few popular examples of common segmentations utilized in social theories. Social structure theories, also called social change theories attempt to analyze the driving forces that change society. Sociologists who study social change use the study of both criminology and sociology to draw conclusions about criminal behavior. The overarching belief of criminology theory is that certain social structures support deviant behavior. The three main branches of social structure theories are the social disorganization theory, the social strain theory and the cultural deviance theory. How well have social structure theories explained delinquent behavior in society? In this paper, the major social structural theories will be defined and analyzed. Social Disorganization Theory: Concentric Zone Theory The Centric Zone Theory was proposed by Shaw, and examined arrest rates in Chicago. It was during these years immigrants living in the inner city begin to relocate to the outskirts of the city. The purpose of their study was to conclude if delinquency was caused by particular immigrant groups or by the environment in which immigrants lived. Park and Burgess adopted the original concentric zone theory, and which separated Chicago into 5 distinct zones. Which were: 1. Central Business District 2. Transitional Zone 3. Working Class Zone 4. Residential Zone 5. Commuter Zone The experiment reveled that arrest rates consistently remained high for Zone 2, the transitional zone. They ultimately concluded that delinquency rates are related with ecological environment in which a person or group dwells. Social Ecology Theory This theory is based on the contention that change is natural. Further, this theory suggests that when an area is invaded, competition erupts and competition leads to disorganization, which can spark deviance. This theory disagrees with the social disorganization theory, since the theory presented by Shaw and McKay generalizes data to make conclusions on an individual basis. However, the social ecological theory seeks to explain the high crime rates in urban areas based on individual circumstances. Strain Theories The strain theory postulates that when regulation is inadequate social problems arise. Anomie Theory states individuals who lack the vehicles to help them realize their objectives eventually become disillusioned and may ultimately turn towards a life of crime. There are two main types of strain. Structural strain is the method that improper law enforcement causes a person to view his or her needs. Individual strain is the pressure that people feel while seeking to meet their personal desires. General Strain Theory The main focus is on defining the types of strain. Agnew identifies the measurements of strain, the major types of strain, the links between strain and crime, coping strategies for strain as well as the determinants of delinquent behavior. The General Strain theory deals with the emotional aspect of criminal behavior. Cultural Deviance Theory Where social organizational theory focuses on conditions in the environment and strain theory concentrates on the conflict between goals and means, cultural deviance theory combines the two schools of thought. Millers Focal Concern Theory Identifies the core values of lower-class culture and their association to crime. For the sports minded individuals, it is a time to gear up and grab the attention of various college and university officials who may hand them their athletic scholarships. Regardless of whether students are deemed hard-working, lazy, diligent, or carefree, there is a special event in their life that will remain unforgettable – the prom night. The summer of 2005 was not only spent swimming and sunbathing in the beach with my family and friends. I took advantage of the school break to scout for a reasonably priced and elegant prom gown. I spent many hours browsing the web for a suitable gown as I was undecided on whether to settle for a halter, strapless, off-shoulder, or V-neck gown. There were many times when I attempted to design my own evening wear but ended up tearing the paper and throwing them in the garbage can. I never realized that preparing for the prom was so difficult for a young high school lady. It was not only the gown that females need to prepare. The matching shoes and bag, earrings and necklace, hairstyle and make-up must also be an important part of our wardrobe. â€Å"Ahhh†¦. I wish that I am a male and all I need to wear is a tux, a white shirt, ribbon, black shoes and socks. No need to wear any make-up and jewelry. All that is needed is a good haircut and a well-shaved face†, I told myself while dropping to the bed when I reached a point of desperation in finding the right attire for me. Two weeks of my summer break was spent on learning how to do my own facial make-over. I had to call my friend, Gale to help me out as she was the most glamorous looking person in class. Gale never left home without fixing her hair and applying make-up. â€Å"Oww†¦that hurts! † I yelled as Gale plucked a fine hair in my eyebrow using a pair of tweezers. â€Å"Hahaha†¦Don’t be a sissy, Faye! † Gale uttered as she giggled at my reaction. â€Å"Can’t you just use a thread instead? † I asked as I vigorously massaged my eyebrow. â€Å"I’m not a beauty expert silly. Towards the end of the eyebrow plucking session, I felt the cold sweat on my body and the discomfort in my tummy. That was gross! † Gale yelled as she covered her nose and walk towards to the window. â€Å"Sorry Gale! † I responded as my face turned pale. To blow the foul odor away, I grabbed a towel and wave it vigorously against the air. Just when I was about to wipe my sweat, Gale noticed something on my chair. â€Å"Faye†¦. what’s this on your chair? † she asked while looking closely at the chair I sat on. â€Å"Gosh†¦you peed on your chair! † she uttered in disbelief as her blue eyes widened. Suddenly, I looked at her, gazed at the chair, touched the front and back side of my shorts and realized that I must have peed while Gale was plucking my eyebrow. While Gale was giggling, I quickly ran to the bathroom to change my shorts and underwear. It was an embarrassing experience for me considering that this was the only time Gale witnessed someone lose control of her bladder as a result of an eyebrow make-over. When I returned to my room, my chair was already clean and dry. Gale cleaned the mess that I created and I felt that I wanted to hide my face under my pillows and bed covers. Sensing my uneasiness and shame due to my silence, Gale tried to divert my attention by discussing the things that I must prepare for the prom. She also gave me tips on how to choose the right gown for my physique and how to fix my hair for the evening occasion. In spite of the humiliating incident, Gale continued to drop by our home to prepare me for the event. There was also a time when we listened to some popular songs and music that may be played during our prom. Then, we pretended to be the King and Queen of the night and we danced to the music of our favorite love song while we were singing together. Before the end of our summer vacation, I was able to apply my make-up and fix my hair with ease. It took some time before I was able to pluck and shape my eyebrow independently. There were many times when I asked Gale to help me and in every session I became wary of my bladder. I learned to take a break each time I find it difficult to tolerate the pain. The prom was indeed a memorable event in my life. Everyone was impressed with the changes in my appearance when they saw me dressed in halter gown, wearing a 3-inch high heeled pair of shoes, a make-up and an attractive hairdo. Gale became the prom queen and I became the girlfriend of the prom king a month after he unintentionally stepped on the hem of my gown that led me to lose my balance on the dance floor and bumped on the waiter who was serving drinks. Well, that was another embarrassing moment. Gale became my best friend and from time to time we both laugh as we recall the summer of our pre-prom preparation days.

Creating Text The process of creating â€Å"text† without using technology appeared to be a simple task that would allow the students to be a creator of his or her unique technology free masterpiece. I just had to come up with a creative, natural way to write text instead of using modern technologies that society takes for granted. How hard and restrictive could this assignment be? I soon found out everything would not go exactly as planned. It took me two attempts and failures before I finally achieved some level of success. My first idea came to me while I was getting ready one morning. Why not use hair to create text! It is a natural part of the human body that is constantly growing, natural and indispensable. I could have taken hair, looped and knotted several clumps together to make letters and then placed those letters to spell out text on any surface. The hair would be portable but undoing the formed letters to create newly formed letters would have been time consuming and difficult. I have several friends who cut hair for a living and I could have easily had them give me hair they cut from their customers. I also attempted to ask my sister for her hair; she has dread locks which would have been easier to work with since they are so thick but she didn’t want to part with them for a homework assignment. The more I thought about this idea the more I realized how time consuming and unrealistic it would be. Using hair would be a creative way to develop text but I would need m ass quantities and lots of patience. My second idea came to me when I took a trip to the grocery store. I went to the produce section and circled around the stands looking for some piece of fruit or vegetable that ... ...gh the writing process can be revised, edited, and visually reviewed where speech is spur of the moment and final. Traditionalists often resisted writing and viewed the process as unnatural and untrustworthy (Dennis Baron 39). However, speech seems to demand more trust because the individual is exposing themselves to their audience which subjects them to high levels of criticism. Overall, this project has exposed the mechanics and technology involved in the writing process. Up until this point I put little thought or recognition into the process I use so widely on a regular basis. After the amount of time, energy, and thought that went in to my attempt to create â€Å"natural† writing mechanics and tools the frustration isn’t worth what seems to be a small victory. In the end the process of trying to think of something natural to create is unnatural.
